Making Shisa nyama !

Origin story:

Rumour has it: Shisa nyama, a Zulu slang expression for ‘Hot Meat’, started off as a way for township butcheries to increase their weekend sales. But they soon became a gathering place for both up-and-coming urban professionals wanting to reconnect with their roots, and local township residents looking for company and a place to drink and eat.

They very quickly evolved and are now offer much more than venues to only eat braaied meat: from music entertainment, sports events, and social parties!

Ingredients :

What do you need ?

Types of meat:

  • Chicken leg
  • Lamb chops
  • Boerewors
  • Rib-eye steak
  • Pork rashers

The marinade:

  • 3 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 3 tbsp chutney (Mrs. Ball’s)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp sriracha (Any spice sauce)
  • ½ cup beer
  • ½ cup Coca-Cola

Instructions:

How is it made?

Give the meat a generous coating of any spice mix you have, then toss it in oil and set it aside until you are ready to braai.

For the marinade, mix the ingredients in a small bowl and have available for when cooking the meat on the braai. Brush the meat with marinade and braai the meat over hot coals for about 5-10 minutes per side while turning often. Re-apply the marinade with every turn.

A true Shisa Nyama is often served with pap, putu, chakalaka, bread slices, potato salad, and more.
